The swollen gum can be easily recognized as they cause severe pain at the jaw level, bleeding, a change in color, inflammation and increased sensitivity.

Fortunately, this affection is not without cure. The best way to relieve the swelling is to follow one on these home remedies which apart from being very effective, are safe for your health.

One of the most common remedies is salt. It has antibacterial properties, managing to relieve the inflammation. Combine 1 tsp of salt with 1 cup of water and mix well. Then gargle for half a minute, making sure you avoid swallowing the composition. Repeating the procedure several times a day will help you deal with the pain.

Ginger is another ingredient that calms your gum pain. You can combine it with salt to prepare a paste that you can apply directly on the gums. Use 1 inch of grated ginger and 1/2 tsp of salt. Once applied, you need to massage your gums for about 1 minute, then rinse with tepid water.

Alternatively, you can combine 1 inch of grated ginger, 1 tbsp of cardamom seeds, ½ tsp of each licorice and coconut oil. Apply the resulting composition and let it action up to 20 minutes. Repeated regularly, it will help you relieve the pain.

Baking soda can also treat swollen gums. Being an alkaline ingredient, it kills the microbes in your mouth, ensuring your oral health. Prepare a composition by mixing 2 tbsp of baking soda and ¼ cup of water. Apply the resulting remedy on your gums and rub gently.

Another common ingredient – Aloe Vera – that has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties is able to treat the swollen gums. A simple mixture of 1 tbsp of Aloe Vera gel and 1 cup of water can help you with your disease. Use this liquid to gargle for about 5 minutes, making sure you do this three times every day. This ingredient can also be used as a toothpaste.

Myrrh oil, even if not that common and used, can make wonders when it comes to swollen gums. The anti-inflammatory properties give it this power. Apply on your teeth a mixture prepared with 1 tsp of myrrh oil and 1 tbsp of water. Once applied, let it rest for minutes, then rinse it off with warm water.

A very special and delicate ingredient – rose flower essence – also has antibacterial properties, helping you fight the gum pain. Combine 50 grams of rose flower essence with 1 tbsp of fresh lemon juice and take some of this liquid in your mouth, without swallowing it. Let the remedy action for several minutes, then spit it out, rinsing with water. A four-time repetition every day should relieve the pain and the swallowing.

Basil, apart from providing your dishes good taste, will also relieve the pain in your gums. This is possible because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties. Prepare a sort of tea, by boiling ½ cup of basil leaves in 1 glass of water, then strain the drink. Take a sip in your mouth and keep it for several minutes before spitting it out. The more often you repeat this procedure, the better results you will have.

Another ingredient with high levels of vitamin C is lemon juice. We all know that lemon is a good antioxidant, but it also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. In order to get rid of swollen gums, all you have to do is prepare a juice by combining 1 glass of water with 1 cup of fresh lemon juice and rinse your mouth with the resulting mixture for about 1 minute. Two repetitions every day, should help you have healthier gums.

If you wish to have the swollen gums cured faster you can opt for turmeric. Rich in curcumin, this ingredient has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. You can combine it with different ingredients for better results. On one hand, you can prepare a composition by mixing well 1 tsp of turmeric powder with ½ tsp of mustard oil and ½ tsp of salt. Spread the resulting paste directly on the gums and massage gently, then wash your mouth with water. Follow this remedy on a daily basis. On the other hand, you can combine 1 tsp of turmeric powder with ½ tsp of vitamin E oil and rub the resulting mixture on your gums. Leave it action for 10 minutes, then rinse it off with tepid water. If you manage to do this every day, after 1 month your gums will look good again.

Apart from these herb-based remedies, there is a traditional method that generally helps you reduce the irritations: compresses. You can use either cold or hot ones, depending on how serious is the situation. For example, if your gums are only swollen, then you can use cold compresses. Wrap some ice cubes in a clean cloth and press on the affected area until your gums go back to their normal size. Pay attention tough not to apply the ice directly on the gums. On the other hand, you should use hot compresses if the swelling is also accompanied by pain. In this case, soak a clean cloth in hot water and apply in on the affected area. Hold the cloth for about 10 minutes, making sure that you avoid direct contact with the gums.

Dietary guidelines:

  • As your gums are very sensitive, try to stay away from cold or hot foods or beverages; it will only accentuate the pain;
  • Eat fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C. Opt for papaya, pineapple, Brussels sprout, strawberries etc.
  • Focus on consuming foods rich in calcium. Choose to eat dairy products, collard greens or soy milk.

Habitual tips:

  • Change your brush every 4 months. The cleaner, the better.
  • Wash your teeth on a daily basis, making sure you brush them two times a day.
  • Avoid smoking. Say no to cigarettes or tobacco.
  • If you have swollen gums, use a soft brush and don’t use mouthwash or dental floss. You will produce bleeding.
  • Consume at least 2 liters of water every day in order to stimulate the saliva production.
